Aurelis is building on more than 10 years of experience with seaweed farming and has a large variation of deployment systems adaptable for various sea environment.
Aurelis has already been pushing the limits in offshore farming and has a strong position in the future farming of the open seas already now working in open waters.
Aurelis is working with sophisticated methods of farming starting from vegetative reproduction, induction of spires and seeding with spires as well as protoplast cells.
Aurelis hatchery work is outstanding and cost optimized.
The seaweed grown by Aurelis in Tanzania is Eucheuma cottonii which is used by our clients to extract carrageenan. Carrageenan is a hydrophilic colloid widely used in food products for its gelling, thickening and stabilizing properties. This is often found in many food products, mainly in dairy and as well as medical products.
Our cultivation is placed in Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park which represents a unique and diverse habitat. Our cultivation is conducted and monitored in such a way that not only does it benefit us but it benefits the ecosystem we utilize. The ecosystem is supported with programs in place that will help increase the nature values. One of those programs is our mangrove planting program.
The coastline of Tanzania provides great promise for the future of seaweed cultivation due to the high tidal movements and the potential for offshore deployment at the rim of the open Indian Ocean.
Our deployment system is designed to comply with the challenges faced by the rising water temperatures that cause the sickness and decline in African seaweed cultivation. We deploy our seaweed on longlines in an innovative deep-sea farming system and involves a large number of women in the cultivation of our products which in return gives income opportunities to local coastal communities that has been specially demanded by the women in the vicinity.
We grow seaweed in various cultivation systems. In our sea farms, sugar kelp are grown on lines submerged in the water.
The production starts in our hatchery afterwhich the seaweed spores are extracted and sewn on lines placed in cultivation trays. The seaweed is then nursed from the microscopical stage to a small seaweed plant that is attached to rope substrate. The seaweed ropes are then taken to our long lines for sea deployment. After 2 years of cultivation, the seaweed will reach a length of 1-2 meters and is then harvested.
Our seaweed grows in pristine waters in marine park Lillebælt at the north-tip of Denmark. Meanwhile, dulse is grown in a land-based tank facility.
The seaweed is vertically circulated by the upwelling of water, giving the dulse a great environment to grow in. The cultivation has astonishing high yields giving the red seaweeds magnificent efficient photosynthesis due to its red pigment, known to be one of the most productive plants on the planet. The dulse is also grown on net structures in our sea farms.
All the seaweed in Denmark are organically certified and used in our food products.
Find more information on the sugar kelp and dulse about their specifications as a super-food here.
We have established a cutting age recirculated seaweed cultivation that allows us to produce seaweed in the absence of a marine environment. We now produce close to the metropolitan city Hamburg which allows us to supply fresh seaweed to restaurants, outlets and institutions that demand fresh seaweed. This concept will be multiplied and installed in other metropolitan cities and be labled as urban marine farming.
We grow laminaria, dule and ulva in this cultivation system.
