Driven by the need for biomass and environmental goals, Macroalgae (Seaweed) cultivation in the sea offers many advantages: With our production, we strive to be BLUE, GREEN & CLEAN:
Taking the production of renewable biomass production to sea
Use the biomass to boost the green transition in foods and agriculture.
Striving to optimize a net-zero clean economy.
Aurelis is building on more than ten years of experience with seaweed farming and has various deployment systems adaptable to various sea environments.
We have already been pushing the limits in offshore farming and have a
strong position in the future farming of the open seas,
which is already working in open waters.
Thanks to our many different production locations, Aurelis has a large
and diversified production with a wide variety of seaweed species covering
the 3 largest commercial seaweed groups: Kelp, Encheumatoids, and Gracilaria.
Aurelis is working with sophisticated farming methods, starting from vegetative reproduction, induction of spires, and seeding with spires and protoplast cells and excels in deep water cultivation and holds patents in off-coast deployment systems..
The seaweed grown by Aurelis in Tanzania is Eucheuma cottonii which our clients use to extract carrageenan. Carrageenan is a hydrophilic colloid widely used in food products for its gelling, thickening, and stabilizing properties. This is often found in many food products, mainly dairy and medical products.
Our cultivation is located in Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park, which represents a unique and diverse habitat. Our cultivation is conducted and monitored in such a way that it benefits not only us but also the ecosystem we utilize. The ecosystem is supported with programs that will help increase its natural values. One of those programs is our mangrove planting program.
The coastline of Tanzania offers great promise for seaweed cultivation in the future due to the high tidal movements and the potential for offshore deployment at the rim of the open Indian Ocean.
We grow Eucheuma Cottonii and Spinosum as well as Gracilaria on lines. The reproduction is vegetative.
Our deployment system is designed to comply with the challenges faced by rising water temperatures, which cause sickness and decline in African seaweed cultivation. We deploy our seaweed on longlines in an innovative deep-sea farming system and involve many women in the cultivation of our products, which in return gives income opportunities to local coastal communities, which has been especially demanded by the women in the vicinity.
We grow seaweed in various cultivation systems. In our sea farms, kelp is grown on lines submerged in the open ocean. We know how to work in true rough open water - sometimes facing roaring waves.
The production starts in our hatchery, where kelp spores are extracted and sewn on lines placed in cultivation trays. The seaweed is then nursed from the microscopical stage to a small seaweed plant attached to a rope substrate. The seaweed ropes are then taken to our long lines for sea deployment. After two years of cultivation, the seaweed will reach a length of 1-2 meters. We have high-quality harvestable seaweed that is aged and uniquely rich in taste and biological compounds.
Our seaweed grows in pristine waters at the north tip of Denmark, where the Baltic Sea meets the Atlantic.
In addition to Kelp, Aurelis produces the valuable seaweed Dulse, which is rich in taste and high in proteins.
We produce dulse in a unique combination of sea- and landbased production circles:
Dulse is grown in a land-based tank facility. The seaweed is vertically circulated by the upwelling of water, giving the dulse a great environment in which to grow. The cultivation has astonishingly high yields, giving the red seaweeds extraordinarily efficient photosynthesis due to its red pigment, which is known to be one of the most productive plants.
This land-based stock allows us to plant seedlings on net structures in our sea farm during winter and accommodates a large sea-based cultivation of dulse, unique in size and function.
All the seaweed in Denmark is organically certified and used in our food products.
